Byobu, Folding screen – Paper, Wood – Exceptional screen depicting a large imperial pleasure boat with a very large pro tome of a phoenix – Japan – Late Edo period
Very exceptional room-divider – byobu depicting a very large ancient imperial pleasure boat with a very large figurehead or pro tome of an auspicious phoenix, in a misty sea with gold leaf clouds and sky. It looks like this huge boat fell out of the sky and plunged into the sea. Please notice the size of the pine trees relative to the phoenix. And the waves around the ship, although it it appears to be landing close to the shore of the sea. There are some signs of age and wear. Specifically in the golden sky some wrinkles and an old repair on the third panel from the right. The overhanging curtains of the palace style cabin of the boat show the imperial multi petaled chrysanthemum crest, and is executed with a good eye for detail. The sudare window-blinds are closed. There are some sailing boats visible at a distance. Late Edo period. The two outer panels of the backside have been repaired but overall this screen is in good condition.
These kind of room-dividers are light in weight and can also be easily mounted flat on a wall and presented as one impressive piece of art.
