RARE 17THC CHINESE MING DYNASTY ISLAMIC MARKET BRONZE SCHOLAR SEAL PASTE BOX
rare 17th century Chinese late Ming dynasty period bronze scholars box made for the Islamic market. This box is from the important Sigrist mansion collection. I have included a picture of the interior of the Mansion taken in 1965. I am told this box would have been made within the Imperial workshops at the time.
This box has a unique period decor and I believe is one of only a handful known to exist with this rarely seen Islamic market design. The box has a nice and early patina that is consistent throughout the exterior. The box is also lightly decorated around the outer rim with Buddhist precious object designs. The box is estate fresh and could use a light cleaning as seen, but I never like to touch anything of this importance ourselves. The box is otherwise in very fine condition with no damage or repairs as seen. The box measures 3 1/2 inches wide, by 1 7/8 inches tall. The box weighs 502 grams. I was able to find two similar examples that have sold as seen to show the high investment potential such examples can have.
